4 Lil Pigs is dedicated primarily to the rescue and adoption of homeless guinea pigs in the Southwest Florida area, as well as towards the education of the general public on the proper care of the cavy. We also aid in the occasional rescue of other exotics, particularly rabbits and hamsters.
We are a brand new rescue, new to the state of Florida, and made painfully aware of the need of such a rescue and sanctuary, by the many abused, abandoned, and homeless guinea pigs in the area.
We started out as a rescue up north in 1996, working with cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. We have since moved on and began rescuing again after a chance encounter with two severely pregnant cavies. We are working towards our incorporation and a 501 (c) 3 status, which would make any donations made to the rescue a tax deductible contribution.
4 Lil Pigs is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization. We currently consist of only a handful of people, and we run the rescue out of our homes. What we do is truly a labor of love, with no monetary gain, and only the satisfaction of knowing that there is one less cavy in the world that is suffering or being abused or neglected.
While we do not condone or support the use of ANY animal as a classroom pet, we do welcome the chance to go in and educate both the staff and children as to why animals should not be kept as pets in a classroom, as well as the proper protocol of care and nutrition for these animals. While we cannot do anything about an animal that is already situated in a classroom, we can hopefully go in and teach everyone how to make sure the animal is safe and kept healthy and happy. And if we can convince a group to act responsibly and to do the right thing, then we are truly rewarded! If you would like us to come on over (whether it be to your home or a shelter or even a classroom,) and give a presenatation and demonstration, feel free to contact us!
The name, 4 Lil Pigs, is fitting of what we do. What we do is for the pigs, so it is a sort of play on words. Nothing fancy, there is no hidden meaning, and the group was not named after any 4 particular pigs. It is just a name, cute, short and sweet and to the point!
